As you celebrate Administrative Professionals Week this year, begin by giving to yourself. Let the following tips be your guide.

    E-Learn a New Skill

Enhance your marketability as an admin by learning a new software skill without leaving the comfort of your computer. Stay competitive by taking a course in JavaScript, FrontPage or DreamWeaver, or enroll in an online certification course. E-learning is flexible, convenient, economical and reliable.

    Update Your Resume

"I'm going to celebrate this Admin Professionals Week by polishing up my resume," says John R. Haslow, administrative assistant in media relations for a Fortune 500 company. "I did it last year, and I'm going to make it a tradition, because I found that it was a useful opportunity to review my successes, focus on areas that need improvement and give some serious thought to my future."

Enroll in a Seminar or Workshop

For starters, check out activities in your community hosted by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). Some of the chapter events to celebrate Administrative Professionals Week include:

    • Workshops and seminars on topics such as workplace trends, evolving technology and management skills for the administrative professional.

    • Networking events and special breakfasts and luncheons.

    • Cosponsored events between IAAP chapters, educational institutions and other business organizations.

    • Proclamation signings by county and city government officials.

    Enroll in a Certification Course

Certification is a great way to show employers you're serious about keeping up with the latest and greatest in your industry. Certification seminars that provide training are a great way to stay current with office trends, make new friends, network with your peers and develop important industry contacts.

Touch Base with Your HR Department

If you're looking to expand your horizons, "don't forget to check with your own HR department to see what's available in terms of assistance," suggests Susan Fenner, IAAP education and professional development manager and Monster Admin/Support Advisor, who notes that tuition reimbursement is "one of the most underused employee benefits."
