QUESTION: I know that it's important to create a resume that highlights strengths and accomplishments, but sometimes the nature of a job may make these things difficult to identify. Do professional resume creators use a method that can help the average or perhaps not-so-average individual accomplish this?
WHAT THE EXPERT SAYS: Great question!
Many people find the PAR (Problem-Action-Result) approach useful when developing their accomplishments. First, jot down problems or challenges you have been presented with throughout your career (for example, staff or budget shortages, pressing deadlines, inherited projects that were running weeks behind schedule, an upcoming audit, etc.).
Next, make notes on what actions you took (either independently or as part of a team) to address each problem. Finally, write down the outcomes of your efforts and try to quantify these outcomes with percentages, dollar amounts, numbers or before-and-after comparisons.
Once you've completed your PAR stories, edit and refine them into powerful accomplishments for your resume.
